I didn’t mean to be rude, but it’s so comfortable to say all I think to you, and feel so safe and happy here.
My Jo, you may say anything to your mother, for it is my greatest happiness and pride to feel that my girls confide in me and know how much I love them.
But someone did come and help her, though Jo did not recognize her good angels at once because they wore familiar shapes and used the simple spells best fitted to poor humanity.
I’d no idea hearts could take in so many. Mine is so elastic, it never seems full now, and I used to be quite contented with my family.
You wrote with no thoughts of fame and money, and put your heart into it, my daughter. You have had the bitter, now comes the sweet. Do your best, and grow as happy as we are in your success.
Mother is always ready to be your confidant, Father to be your friend, and both of us hope and trust that our daughters, whether married or single, will be the pride and comfort of our lives.
You mayn’t get the things themselves; but nothing can prevent you from having the fun of looking forward to them.
I’m quite content to be Anne of Green Gables, with my string of pearl beads. I know Matthew gave me as much love with them as ever went with Madame the Pink Lady’s jewels.
It’s never been easy for me to say things out of my heart, but at times like this it’s easier. I love you as dear as if you were my own flesh and blood and you’ve been my joy and comfort ever since you came to Green Gables.
And I’ll read to you and keep you cheered up. You sha’n’t be dull or lonesome. And we’ll be real cozy and happy here together, you and I.
And, Leslie, I can’t help believing that life has something good and beautiful for you yet.
Talking it all out seems to have done away with it, somehow. It’s very strange--and I thought it so real and bitter. It’s like opening the door of a dark room to show some hideous creature you’ve believed to be there--and when the light streams in your monster turns out to have been just a shadow, vanishing when the light comes.
They’re bound to come--and no house, whether it’s a palace or a little house of dreams, can bar ’em out. But they won’t get the better of you if you face ’em TOGETHER with love and trust. You can weather any storm with them two for compass and pilot.
I’d be real happy even if we couldn’t talk at all, when I come here--jest to sit and look at you and your pictures and your flowers would be enough of a treat.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared, for today is holy to our Lord. Don’t be grieved, for the joy of Yahweh is your strength.”
There is one who speaks rashly like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise heals.
A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
A glad heart makes a cheerful face, but an aching heart breaks the spirit.
This is the day that Yahweh has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it!
How long, Yahweh? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?
But I trust in your loving kindness. My heart rejoices in your salvation.
I will sing to Yahweh, because he has been good to me.
